DENVER—Police said three men burst into a home and robbed a 72-year-old man early Friday after one of the suspects claimed to be an officer serving a search warrant.

The man was sleeping when someone wearing a dark vest with “POLICE” written on it knocked on his door and asked to be let in, police said in a statement. Two other men with ski masks followed him inside and forced the victim on the floor and tied him up.

The three men then ransacked the house and stole money.

Police said people can ask for a commission card and a photo ID in addition to a badge if they are unsure someone is an officer.
