Getting your player ready...

The first of two Board of Control meetings for the Colorado High School Activities Association will be Thursday in Aurora and is to include discussion of a number of proposals with wide-ranging ramifications.

One of the fuller agendas in years awaits.

Some of the highlights:

• Establishing new enrollment figures, leagues and playoff formats for football for the next two seasons, which usually draws some of the most heated debate.

• A drastic change in track and field in which the season-ending meet would be finals only for all classes at one site after sectional qualifying.

• Allowing practice for winter sports Dec. 28-31.

• Permitting upper classes of basketball and softball to schedule 23 regular-season games, not counting tournaments.

• Assigning new regionals for 4A golf to accommodate the beginning of 3A.

• New regionals for cross country, which will add 2A in the fall.

• Date changes for the new 1A baseball class.

To the pitch.

Ameera Abdullah, formerly of Smoky Hill in Aurora and a junior at Florida, has been selected to the U.S. under-23 soccer team that will play in this summer’s Nordic Cup.

An all-Southeastern Conference player, Abdullah will train with Team USA in Carson, Calif. She was named All-Colorado while with the Class 5A Buffaloes.

Running.

Kevin Williams of D’Evelyn and Kaitlin Hanenburg of The Classical Academy have been named the state’s inaugural Gatorade winners in cross country.

Williams, a senior, won Colorado’s 4A race in October. He finished sixth in regional qualifying for the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego, where he finished 26th. Hanenburg, a sophomore, won the state’s 3A race and finished fourth at a Nike Team National regional.

Banquet bounty.

The CHSAA Hall of Fame banquet, in which the 19th Hall of Fame class will be inducted, is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel Southeast, I-225 and Parker Road, Aurora. Information: CHSAA office, 303-344-5050.

Also, the Cherry Creek Diamond Club will have its banquet to support baseball on Saturday at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center in the Denver Tech Center, 7 p.m.
