Frigid temps will keep snowpack from melting away

Colorado’s snowpack has declined slightly in the past week, from 127 percent of the 30-year average to 121 percent Saturday.

But the cold weather will make sure it does not begin melting early. And more snow is falling in the mountains.

In addition to snow being the lifeblood of ski areas, municipal water providers, energy companies and agriculture depend on melting snow.

Woman killed, 3 hurt in crash of pickup and SUV

WELD COUNTY — A woman was killed Saturday night when a pickup truck hit her SUV broadside, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 5 p.m. on Colorado 14 and Weld County Road 43.

The pickup hit the SUV, ran off the road and collided with a tree, troopers said. Three people in the pickup were taken to a hospital, where two were in serious condition and one was in critical condition. No names have been released. Troopers said it does not appear the accident involved alcohol or speed.

ICE office expanding in Springs

Under pressure to crack down on illegal immigrants, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is expanding its Colorado Springs office from two agents to 10.

The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported that Republican U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn said the additional staff will cost about $1 million a year, and will come on board next month.

It remained unclear where the additional illegal immigrants likely to be detained will be housed. The El Paso County Jail is so crowded that some inmates sleep outside in tents.

Lamborn said the focus of the new agents will be illegal immigrants who have committed crimes.

Police impostor, accomplices rob man, ransack home

DENVER — Police said three men burst into a home and robbed a 72-year-old man after one of the suspects claimed to be an officer serving a search warrant.

The man was sleeping early Friday when someone wearing a dark vest with “POLICE” written on it knocked on his door and asked to be let in, police said in a statement.

Two other men with ski masks followed him inside and tied the victim up. The three then ransacked the house and stole money.

Police said people can ask for a commission card and a photo ID in addition to a badge if they are unsure whether someone is an officer.

City reels in national fishing fame

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — A national magazine is rating Glenwood Springs as the best city under 100,000 population for fishing in the nation.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel said the Field & Stream issue due out Wednesday contains the ranking.

Several fishing guides say they are glad the news is out, but that most serious anglers have known about Glenwood for decades. Visitors and locals have the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers to choose from.
