OLATHE, Colo.—Carbon monoxide poisoning may have killed a 17-month-old boy and his grandfather, authorities said.

Truett Simoens and 72-year-old Julian Beamer were found not breathing Saturday in Beamer’s home, where the boy had stayed Friday night, Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap said.

The boy’s grandmother, who was found breathing, was hospitalized Sunday.

Truett’s parents went to the home Saturday after they were unable to reach the Beamers by phone.

County Coroner Thomas Canfield and Dunlap said carbon monoxide poisoning was suspected, but nothing was confirmed.

Dunlap said the fire department’s initial reading for carbon monoxide within the house was 60 parts per million. The Environmental Protection Agency says average levels in homes without gas stoves vary from 0.5 to 5 parts per million, while levels near properly adjusted gas stoves are about 5 to 15 ppm.
