African-American community activist Alvertis Simmons held a news conference Monday to formally accept the apology of William Farr for a racially tinged joke at the National Western Stock Show’s Citizen of the West dinner last week.
Simmons called the remarks “very insensitive, very bigoted,” but acknowledged a letter of regret over the incident from stock show president and chief executive Pat Grant. Farr apologized after making a joke about renaming the White House if Barack Obama is elected president. Farr could not be reached for comment Monday. Simmons and other minority leaders called on the stock show to add more minority board members and to provide more programs for minority children.
