The NFL giveth to Colorado State. The NFL taketh away.
New coach Steve Fairchild, the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator, immediately named ex-Ram Anthoney Hill as running backs coach Wednesday after newly-hired Curtis Modkins took a job with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Modkins’ offensive coordinator title at CSU immediately went to receivers coach Greg Peterson.
With one weekend on campus, Modkins shatters the MWC’s unofficial shortest coaching tenure record set by Brian Schneider when he was at Air Force a few weeks last January before leaving for the Oakland Raiders.
Modkins rejoins his Georgia Tech boss Chan Gailey with the Chiefs. He was at CSU long enough to get one of the name plates for his office door and do some recruiting.
Hill, who spent last season in his first high-school head coaching job, had interviewed with Fairchild earlier this month at the coaches convention. There was some fan disappointment that he wasn’t among the initial hires, but Fairchild hinted last Saturday Hill would eventually be on the staff.
After Hill finished his CSU career in 1994 leading the Rams to their first WAC title and establishing the since broken school career total offense record, Hill returned to CSU in 1998 to finish his degree as an undergraduate assistant.
“When Anthoney was here we proved that CSU could win 10 games, play in bowl games and get into those national polls,” Fairchild said in a prepared statement.
Hill, who has coached at several San Diego area high schools has natural recruiting ties to the area. Modkins was expected to be a recruiting force in Texas.
Peterson, who originally was assigned the title of recruiting coordinator, will get help from quarterbacks coach Daren Wilkinson.
