Getting your player ready...
Chris Chelios, the ever-aging, never-aged Detroit Red Wings defenseman, turns 46 today. How does the NHL’s oldest player plan to spend it?
Nothing too strenuous: biking through the Santa Monica Mountains and swimming in the Pacific.
Chelios is the second-oldest player to skate in an NHL game — behind Gordie Howe, who was 52 when he suited up for the Hartford Whalers in the 1979-80 season. But he’s younger than NFL kicker Morten Andersen, 47. In the NBA, 41-year-old Dikembe Mutombo is the oldest. And Chelios is a baby compared to pitcher Julio Franco, who’s pushing 50 but still looking to land with a team this offseason.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Chelios. Your cake is on fire.
