Smithsonian-commissioned pendant by jeweler and former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, $550 online at ; click on “jewelry collection”
From politics to pendants
Campbell joins Navajo artist and actor Ray Tracey as the second jeweler asked to design a fundraising piece for the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of the American Indian. Campbell spent months researching the Naja design, tracing it to a 14th century Moorish good-luck amulet. A turquoise center stone unites the reversible piece, one side with petroglyph motifs, one with celestial designs. Each Creation Pendant is hand-cast and weighs 2 ounces.
