BAYFIELD, Colo.—Although Bayfield is cleaning up its sewage problem with construction of a new treatment plant, the state has fined the southwestern community $150,000.

The Durango Herald says Bayfield has spent more than $1 million since August of 2005 to try to comply with state health rules. And the amount of pollutants leaving the plant are at close to an all-time low.

“The effluent has been at 50 percent of our permit limits for the past six months, which is excellent,” said Town Manager Justin Clifton.

Levels of organic material flowing in, however, continue to periodically reach near all-time highs and sometimes triple official limits.
