Arapahoe Basin will host the sixth annual Beacon Bowl and Avalanche Awareness Day on Saturday as a benefit for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC). Developed by A-Basin’s ski patrol to teach and test skills for the backcountry, Beacon Bowl competition is a timed avalanche transceiver competition for recreational and pro levels. Free beacon clinics with pros from the A-Basin Ski Patrol, Ortovox and BCA will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Competition gets underway at 10 a.m., followed by an avalanche dog and snow pit demonstration by the A-Basin Ski Patrol at 1 p.m. The clinics and demonstrations will take place on the mountain at the base of the Lenawee Mountain lift. A $15 registration fee will be donated to CAIC and will cover a raffle ticket, a beverage and a slice of pizza at the après-ski party. Other fundraising events, including a silent auction and the après-ski party, will benefit CAIC, a nonprofit dedicated to avalanche forecasting and public education. Registration will be at A-Basin on the day of the event. For additional participation information, call 888-ARAPAHOE or visit .
