AURORA — Firefighters happened to be in the right place at the right time, not to mention with the right gear and training, when two golden retrievers fell through ice at Centennial Park pond in Aurora on Saturday.
The Aurora Fire Department Technical Rescue Team was heading out to Aurora Reservoir to practice ice rescue when the call came through, fire Capt. Mark Turley said Monday.
“They were going to ice-rescue training and they get this call, so it worked out pretty neat for the dogs,” Turley said.
The report that the dogs fell through the ice came about 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The rescue team reached the dogs in time and the two are doing just fine, Turley said.
Fire Department officials say it is never a good idea to try to save animals that fall through the ice by crawling out on a frozen pond yourself. The best response is to call 911.
