Colorado will hold its presidential caucuses Tuesday. Between now and then, we will introduce you to a few of the people who might participate in the process.
NAME: Gene Bruhn
AGE: 62
OCCUPATION: Auto broker
HOMETOWN: Golden
POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Republican
POLITICAL BACKGROUND: Bruhn has been a registered Republican since he was 18 years old, he said, but this will be the first caucus he has participated in because Colorado’s caucuses finally are meaningful. Bruhn has focused his attention on lobbying at the state legislature on bills that affect his business. He’s always surprised to see that he is the only private citizen who shows up to voice his opinion, Bruhn said, even though he is proof that one person can make a difference.
ON HIS MIND: Former New York City Major Rudy Giuliani isn’t a true conservative, Bruhn said, but he is the only one who has governed conservatively. But with Giuliani’s exit Wednesday, Bruhn will have to look elsewhere. Bruhn said he would support any Republican candidate who was nominated except Sen. John McCain. McCain is a liberal in conservative’s clothing, Bruhn said, and he thinks McCain would be too much of a wasteful spender to have his support.
RATE YOUR POLITICAL TEMPERATURE: Red hot
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: One thing I would change about presidential politics is . . . “I would take away the . . . McCain/ Feingold act. I think it’s caused a whole lot of corruption in campaign finance. I think people can take money from whoever they want as long as they disclose it. I mean, so what? It is nobody’s business.”
