ECKERT, Colo.—A fire that killed a 2 1/2-year-old boy is believed to have started in a bedroom where authorities suspect the tot was watching television.

The fire that killed Stoney Bridgeo on Wednesday is believed to have been accidental, Delta County Undersheriff Mark Taylor said Friday.

Sheriff’s investigators and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation believe the fire started near a dresser and an electric baseboard heater, he said.

The boy’s father, Michael Bridgeo, escaped the home, but Stoney was trapped. Firefighters were unable to reach Stoney because of intense heat.

Taylor has said the child’s mother was taking other children to day care at the time.
