Much is made of 18-year-olds who change their minds and decommit from schools. The recruiter is “crushed” and moves on to the rest of his list.

When the situation is reversed, it’s the high school senior who gets hurt. Kind of like a bait-and-switch by a car dealer.

Highlands Ranch offensive tackle Joe Caprioglio committed to Kansas State in June and attended the Wildcats’ summer camp. He received the usual calls and written notes all fall from the Kansas State staff, but the school didn’t schedule his official visit until last weekend.

Then he was told they wanted to “grayshirt” him, or delay his scholarship until next January. Grayshirts can attend fall semester on their own dime, or stay home while their friends leave for college.

“It took a day for it to really set in,” Caprioglio said. “I was blindsided.”

Thanks to his Highlands Ranch coach, Darrel Gorham, letting schools know he was back on the market, Caprioglio drew ample renewed interest but little time to take more trips. He went to Colorado State this weekend, one of the schools that initially offered him.

“I liked what Coach (Steve) Fairchild had to say. They are definitely at the top of the list,” Caprioglio said. He’s also heard from Michigan State, Nebraska and Iowa State.

He’s ranked fifth on top 15 list for Colorado. If he signs with CSU on Wednesday, he will be the first three-star recruit in the class.
