COLORADO SPRINGS — Bentley Rayburn, a candidate for the 5th Congressional District, will petition onto the August Republican primary ballot.

Rayburn, a retired Air Force two-star general, faces incumbent Rep. Doug Lamborn and Jeff Crank, a former top administrator to U.S. Rep. Joel Hefley.

Lamborn is to formally announce his candidacy at 6 p.m. Monday at Giuseppe’s Old Depot Restaurant in Colorado Springs.

Rayburn will need to submit 1,200 signatures to the secretary of state’s office in early June. Last week, he sent a letter to 750 people saying “with my opponents likely to return to the negative tactics they succumbed to in the previous race, I worry that if everyone’s energy is focused on a small percentage of Republican voters that the campaign will likely become mired in a counterproductive race that will further damage our party.”
