Getting your player ready...

We’re appreciative of what all the snow piling up at resorts means to deep-pocketed skiers and ‘boarders, really, we are. But all the blabbing about paying to reach thigh-high powder almost made us forget to think about getting out in the woods for next to nothing.

Estes Park hasn’t forgotten, though. The city’s deep into Snowshoe Estes — a series of events, including guided tours, and shopping discounts and such specials as 10 percent off of lots of lodging — which runs through the end of April.

The next best chance to take advantage of it all — and the 40-plus inches of snow that have piled up in Rocky Mountain National Park — is Winter Trails Day, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Feb. 16, at the park-n-Ride near Glacier Basin Campground. You’ll have to pay the $20 park entry fee, but after that, basic snowshoe instruction on demo gear, plus tips for conditioning, nutrition, hydration and the 411 on winter hiking and camping, are free. Sign-up forms are at winter , the Estes Park Chamber office at 140 Moraine Ave., the CVB Visitor Center on U.S. 34, or at the event. Details at .
