Sonny Lubick gets his day

Today is Sonny Lubick Day at the state capitol. Gov. Bill Ritter will sign a proclamation and meet with the former Colorado State football coach at 2:30 p.m. today.

A large gathering of family and friends is expected to honor the man who coached CSU for 15 years.

Unfinished business

New CSU coach Steve Fairchild is taking a few days off after the recruiting whirlwind for one remaining recruiting task: his daughter, a high school senior. He hoped to catch one of her basketball games and catch up with family he hasn’t seen for more than a month.

“I haven’t gotten a commitment yet,” he said.

Leaning left

Not that Fairchild has a bias for left-handed quarterbacks but . . . he was a southpaw in his playing days, quarterbacks coach Daren Wilkinson is left-handed and Fairchild couldn’t help note that QB recruit Alex Kelly of Rocky Mountain High School is a lefty.

Rams honored

The Mountain West included 26 CSU football, cross country and volleyball athletes on the academic all-conference list for the fall semester. A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 was required. The only 4.0 was posted by women’s cross country standout April Thomas, a senior majoring in biological science. There were 10 football players, led by Jeff Horinek’s 3.92 in health and exercise science.

BYU led the list with 74 athletes. CSU and San Diego State tied for last with 26.
