Denver restaurateurs are going to NYCagain!
I wrote here last month that the “Gems of Denver” are headed to the James Beard House to cook it up Denver-style on March 11. The Gems are Matt Anderson of Bistro Vendome, John Broening of Duo, Max Mackissock of Vita, Alex Seidel of Fruition, Jennifer Jasinski of Rioja and Bistro Vendome, and Yasmin Lozada-Hissom of Duo.
Now comes word that Brown Palace chef Thanawat Bates from the Palace Arms is going to the Beard House for a solo dinner April 21 — dubbed “Seven — an evening of culinary sins,” with seven courses repping the seven deadly sins. Like “Lust,” a truffle with strawberry Champagne, gold and chocolate.
Plans are also in the works to send another cooking crew to the Beard House on May 14. This gang, organized by Leigh Sullivan-Guard, would be Troy Guard (who does not currently have a restaurant), Tyler Wiard of Elway’s, Goose Sorenson of Solera, Matt Selby of Vesta and Steuben’s and Keegan Gerhart of the upcoming D Bar.
And nine chefs head to Madison Square Park in NYC on April 11 for a one-day outdoor expo called “Let’s Talk the Many Seasons of Colorado.” Look for Thomas Salamunovich of Larkspur in Vail, Hugo Matheson from the Kitchen in Boulder, Eric Skokan from Black Cat in Boulder, Elise Wiggins from Panzano and more TBA.
That’s a lotta Colorado cooking for Manhattan. We’ll show them how to sear tuna!
Swap meet.
Kim and Randall Beckman-Heskett of Westminster star in ABC’s “Wife Swap” Wednesday night — and it sounds swappy.
Kim — a liberated, high-powered corporate exec — goes to Pawtucket, R.I., to take the place of Lee-Ann Childs, a dedicated Christian who home-schools her six children and thinks a woman’s place is in the home helping her husband.
High jinks ensue!
The best.
Mountain Living magazine’s Best of the High Country issue saluted the great thin-air winners with a party Thursday night at the St. Regis in Aspen.
The mag says Aspen is the best ski resort; Sky Hotel has the best après ski scene; Park City has the best celebrity spotting (with a picture of Laura Linney at the Sundance Film fest, nevermind that she lives full time in Telluride). Best high-country restaurants include D19 and Spago.
City spirit.
R.E.M. is set to play Red Rocks on June 3 — with help from indie rockers Modest Mouse and National. . . . I don’t even know who he’s impersonating half the time, but Frank Caliendo will be at the Buell Theatre on Feb. 23; and Jim Norton‘s at the Gothic Theatre on March 14. . . . Mayor Hick, Gov. Bill Ritter, Pete Coors, Charlie Gallagher and Steve Farber are expected at the homecoming Up With People concert on Saturday night at the Buell. . . . Sez who: “Up, up with people! You meet ’em wherever you go!” Up With People theme song
