AUGUSTA, Maine—The Maine medical examiner’s office has confirmed the identities of the woman and boy who were killed in last week’s plane crash in West Gardiner.
Using DNA samples, the medical examiner identified the victims as 45-year-old Jeanette Symons and her 10-year-old son, Balan Symons, both of Steamboat Springs, Colo. The victims were tentatively identified following the crash.
The cause of death was blunt force trauma.
Jeanette Symons was piloting the six-seat jet when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Augusta on Feb. 1 during a storm. Symons was a well-known telecommunications pioneer whose latest venture was Industrious Kid, a social networking Web site for children that she founded in 2005.
