Los Angeles – “Spring Awakening” added to its awards hardware Sunday night when it took home the 2008 Grammy for best musical show album Sunday night at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center.
The award was presented to composer Duncan Sheik and lyricist Steven Sater. Sheik returns to Colorado on Monday night (Feb. 11) to complete his three-city tour of the state with a concert at Beaver Creek’s Vilar Arts Center ($36, 7:30 p.m., 888-920-2787).
“Spring Awakening” won eight 2007 Tony Awards including best musical. It’s a bold adaptation of the Frank Wedekind play about German teens discovering sex in 1891 in a near-total absence of education — set to a contemporary rock score. It’s distinguished by songs like “Mama Who Bore Me,” “Touch Me” and “The Bitch of Living.” It also won Tony Awards for best director (Michael Mayer); best book (Sater); best score (Sheik and Sater); best choreography (Bill T. Jones); best featured actor (John Gallagher Jr.); Best lighting (Kevin Adams), and best orchestrations (Sheik).
The score “illuminates the urgency of adolescent self-discovery, the burning intensity of teen friendships, and the innate suspicion of the uncomprehending adult world,” according to press materials.
Also nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award were the cast recordings for “A Chorus Line,” “Company,” “Grey Gardens” and “West Side Story”
