Colorado freshman Brittany Spears was named the Big 12’s rookie of the week Monday for the second time this season.

Spears averaged 19 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in games last week against Nebraska and Oklahoma. She has been the best Big 12 freshman statistically this season, leading all frosh in scoring (13.8), rebounding (7.0), blocked shots (1.5) and free-throw percentage (87.5).

DU’s Lopez invited to elite meet.

University of Denver junior gymnast Jessica Lopez will travel to New York on March 1 to compete in the 2008 Tyson American Cup at Madison Square Garden, which will be televised live on NBC.

The Tyson American Cup will include some of the world’s top gymnasts and several U.S. Olympic hopefuls. Lopez, DU’s first three-time All-American, has won seven event titles in four meets this season, and has added three all-around victories.

DU men’s soccer signs nine.

The University of Denver men’s soccer team signed nine players to national letters of intent Monday. The nine new Pioneers are goalkeeper Gavin Dawson (Carrboro, N.C.), midfielder Alex DeCosta (Dallas), forward Sam Garza (Highland Village, Texas), defender Chase Humphrey (Ocean, Md.), midfielder/forward Matt Kirby (Beaumont, Texas), defender/midfielder Bob Miltenberger (Southlake, Texas), midfielder/forward Zach Paul (Longmont), midfielder/forward Jordan Softli (Sammamish, Wash.) and midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas).
