Getting your player ready...

While a smattering of Rockies got a jump on spring training Thursday, reliever Brian Fuentes was in St. Petersburg, Fla., pleading his case in salary arbitration.

The left-hander asked for a salary increase from $3.525 million to $6.5 million. The Rockies countered with $5.05 million.

Resolution in the case, heard by arbitrators Robert Bailey, Dan Brent and Elliott Shriftman, is expected today.

Fuentes is just the third Rockies player to take a case to arbitration, joining pitchers Sun-Woo Kim in 2006 and Dennys Reyes in 2002.

Rockies pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Tucson today, with the first official workout set for Saturday. A number of players worked out Thursday at the club’s complex at Hi Corbett Field, including first baseman Todd Helton, starting pitcher Aaron Cook and starting second base candidates Jayson Nix and Clint Barmes.

Final deal in place

Outfielder Brad Hawpe finalized his contract for one year, $3.925 million, and he can earn an additional $100,000 if he reaches 675 plate appearances.
