Joe Sakic skated hard Thursday, but Paul Stastny not at all for the Avalanche. And Brett Clark will wait at least two weeks before a determination is made whether his dislocated shoulder needs surgery.

That was the latest mixed bag of medical news for the Avs in what has been their unfortunately overriding story line much of the season.

Sakic, out since late December from hernia surgery, “is doing very well” in his rehabilitation, coach Joel Quenneville said. Stastny, who apparently suffered a groin injury after nearly returning from an appendectomy, might try to resume skating Saturday.

Clark is most likely lost for the season, but the Avs are holding out hope the shoulder might improve with enough rest to salvage a late-season or playoff return.

No Jose talks

Don Meehan, the agent for Avs goalie Jose Theodore, said, despite Theodore’s recent stellar play, he has not engaged in any talks this season toward a contract extension for his client.

Theodore can be an unrestricted free agent in July. He is making $6 million on the final year of his deal.

No Foppa news

The Avs still have heard nothing from Peter Forsberg or his agent, Don Baizley, regarding a decision about a possible return. Forsberg reportedly has asked teams interested in him for more time to determine whether his right ankle is stable enough to play.

Footnote

Blues goalie Manny Legace improved to 13-2-0 against the Avs in his career with the win. He has had a 2.00 goals-against average and .933 save percentage (450 shots, 420 saves).
