Peter Forsberg, the former Avalanche star whose career has been plagued by injuries, is not coming back to the NHL this season.

After trying for weeks to get his balky right ankle to feel good enough to return to action, Forsberg has decided to give up on his quest, at least for this season.

Forsberg’s agent, Don Baizley, confirmed to The Denver Post today that his client couldn’t overcome the pain.

Baizley said Forsberg wanted to give teams interested in him at least a week’s notice prior to the NHL trade deadline, next Tuesday, about his intentions.

Forsberg, 34, has tried on as many as 30 different pairs of skates this year, to try and get a comfortable fit for his ankle, which underwent surgery late last year.

He has skated recently with MoDo of the Swedish Elite League, and reportedly felt better until a setback earlier this month. Since, he has not felt healthy enough to sign with another NHL team.

The Avalanche was interested in getting Forsberg back, but hadn’t heard anything on his status until today.
