Getting your player ready...

I’m a “Barefoot in the Park” sort of girl: fizzy fun with a few moments of melodrama thrown in.

And my floors show it.

I’m also a barefoot-in-the-house sort of girl, which is why I turned to Simply Safe, a new line of green cleaning products sold online at and at select big-box stores. This product contains no caustics, phosphates or flammable solvents. Developed by a “green” chemist, Simply Safe is made with purified water, is pH neutral and promises to work as well as or better than traditional cleaners.

But not all green cleaners cut the mustard. So our house, a place that sees frequent guests, seemed the perfect place to test this one.

There’s a constant buildup of sidewalk dirt and dust on our floors. Then there are the ecstatic moments — wine explosions, tortilla experiments and garden parties — and their mucky aftermath. All of it adds up to a certain amount of treachery for the naked-heeled among us.

I used Simply Safe on three floor surfaces: wide-plank pine hardwood in the living room, one-sixteenth-inch aluminum diamond plate in the kitchen and 12-inch slate tile in the bathroom. I immediately saw the difference on the wood floors as dirt came away with every mop stroke. I had a similar result with the tile, which looked like new and showed no streaks.

Already impressed, I hovered barefoot on the couch and waited for all the floors to dry. Then, time for the test!

The wood floor felt soft and clean to the touch of my tootsies. And it wasn’t sticky.

The metal floor in the kitchen also looked clean, though it wasn’t as shiny as I like it to be.

Simply Safe has a fresh, flowery scent. I count that as an improvement over the “lemony dirt” smell our house usually takes on after cleaning.

An environmentally friendly product that works well and smells good — barefoot dance party, anyone?
