PUEBLO, Colo.—Pueblo health officials say they won’t spray for mosquitoes this summer but will still monitor for West Nile virus, which the insects can carry.

City-County Health Department Director Christine Nevin-Woods says spraying was cut from the budget to save money. It costs about $118,000 a year.

The department says it was the only health agency in the state that paid for spraying. In some other areas, special districts take care of it.

City officials say they’ll discuss other ways to spray for mosquitoes.

Only a few people who are infected with West Nile end up feeling sick. Symptoms can include fever, headache and neck stiffness.

In more serious cases, West Nile can cause blindness, paralysis and inflammation of the brain.
