The Japanese writing tattooed on each of Steven Vigil’s elbows says a lot about the life of the Ridge View Academy senior.
Love on the right. Hate on the left.
“Because there are people that I love and people that I hate,” Vigil said, a bit sheepishly.
Perhaps they speak better of Vigil’s past, which included a state championship as a 103-pound freshman at Rocky Ford before he brushed too many times with the law and was sentenced to Ridge View, a juvenile facility in Watkins.
“It’s normal, really, but in the back of my head it’s like, ‘I get another chance,’ so I’m going to take advantage of it,” Vigil said Thursday after he pinned Mountain Range sophomore Trevor Brumley in 1 minute, 36 seconds in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.
Vigil still wears his Rocky Ford headgear and “still bleeds red and gold,” according to his father, Steve Vigil.
Weekend passes allow Steven to visit his family. Ridge View, which is a charter school run by DPS, houses anywhere up to 500 kids who have been appointed by the state. They go through a boot camp, run 12 miles a week and get a chance to straighten things out.
“We don’t take violent offenders, we don’t take sexual offenders, but we do take repeat offenders,” Rams coach Mel Oliveros said.
Also representing the Rams is 215-pound senior JJ Velarde, formally of Chaparral, who pinned favored Palisade junior Caleb Sisneros.
“There’s not a day goes by that I’m not mad at myself for the things I did,” Velarde said. “To be able to be here, in my environment, in my domain, with the people I know and love, it’s just awesome.”
Nine of the 10 returning champions prevailed, and 103-pound Conifer freshman Tony Peña improved to 39-0 by pinning Alex Abreu of Rock Canyon.
The crowded 135-pound bracket thinned out one of its three returning champions when Pueblo South junior Jeremy Aguero lost an 8-6 decision to Fossil Ridge senior Nathan Lecher.
Lecher tied the score 6-6 with an escape late in the third period and then pounced with less than 10 seconds remaining when Aguero went for a takedown. Lecher shrugged off Aguero’s high attempt and grabbed the legs of last year’s 119-pound champion in time for the victory.
“I was hoping to come in without (facing a returning champion), but it’s nice to get him out of the way and keep going,” Lecher said. “I got a couple more.”
If things go perfectly, Lecher would only have to face one more returning champion, as Greeley Central’s Scott Schaeffer and Fort Lupton’s Saul Guerrero are in the upper bracket.
