Snowboarders and skiers heading to ski resorts are clogging Interstate 70 as several inches of new snow is forecast.
The north and central mountains could get between 2 and 4 inches of new snow today, while the southern peaks could get another 1 to 3 inches, said Jim Kalina, spokesman for the National Weather Service in Boulder.
There is a snow advisory in the San Juan Mountains, which in the past few days has received up to 10 inches of new snow, Kalina said.
“There’s quite a bit of snow there,” he said this morning.
Eastbound I-70 is closed in Glenwood Springs because of icy road conditions and numerous accidents, said Mike Murray, a spokesman for the Colorado Transportation Department.
Most of the way up into the mountains on I-70 is fairly dry until around the Eisenhower Tunnel, Murray said.
In Denver, there is about a 20 percent chance of snow today, Kalina said. Temperatures could rise to about 50 today and increase to a high of about 62 by Sunday, he said.
A new weaker storm system was headed to Colorado by Monday and will drop temperatures by about 15 degrees; there will be about a 10 percent chance of snow in Denver, Kalina said.
“It probably won’t affect us too much,” he said.
Temperatures should go back up to the 50s by Wednesday, Kalina said.
