DENVER—Grand Valley cruised to its first team state wrestling championship Saturday night and added the school’s first individual champions in the process.
Grand Valley, located in Parachute on the Western Slope, had three wrestlers in the finals, including Ryan Gallegos, head coach Rick Gallegos’ son, at 130 pounds and brothers Tyler (152) and Cody Miles (160).
The Miles brothers won their championship bouts, while Gallegos finished second to Ty Sickels of Nucla in a 4-2 decision.
The Cardinals’ previous best finish at state was 12th last year.
Grand Valley scored 146 points, Paonia finished with 113, Wiggins was in third place with 105 points, Burlington had 90 and Norwood finished fifth with 83.
Norwood returning champion Hugh Hardman defended his crown at 140 pounds by pinning Tyler Eberhardt of Lyons in 1:36.
Hardman’s teammate, Stryker Lane, the 189-pound winner last year, finished with a perfect 20-0 record by pinning Isaiah Churchill of Burlington in 1:42 at 215 pounds.
In perhaps the biggest upset in the Class 2A finals, freshman Nick Adams from Discovery Canyon won a 6-5 decision over previously unbeaten Soroco’s Justin Iacovetto, a junior, at 112 pounds. Iacovetto finished 26-1. Adams went 31-3 to start his career.
