A driver who police say was drunk killed a 14-year-old boy early this morning in the 2800 block of Orion Drive before he sped off.

After the accident, police followed a half-mile trail of leaking car fluid that led them to the driver’s home where they found a 2004 Pontiac GTO with heavy front-end damage, and they arrested Michael E. Gibbs, 20.

Authorities said Gibbs was speeding on Orion Drive about 1:30 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve then ran his car onto the right shoulder of the road where the victim was standing with four other teens. The teens attempted to run out of the car’s way, but the car hit the victim, who was thrown into a pile of landscape timbers. It was not known early today if the other teens were injured.

Police did not release the victim’s name until relatives could be notified but said he was a resident of Colorado Springs.
