A 20-year-old man has been arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide after he struck and killed a 14-year-old boy and then fled the scene early this morning.

Michael E. Gibbs was driving fast on the 2800 block of Orion Drive when he lost control of his 2004 Pontiac GTO on a curve and struck Graham Johnson at 1:38 a.m., according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Johnson was standing with four friends off the road, and when they saw the GTO out of control, they ran to avoid getting hit.

The car struck Johnson and threw him a lengthy distance into some landscaping timbers, a police report says. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, the report says.

After striking the child, Gibbs drove away from the accident, authorities say.

Officers followed a trail of fluid left by the car to a home at 815 Tyco Court, the report says. They found the car with extensive damage and arrested Gibbs, who was inside the home.
