Anyone receiving an e-mail warning they are the target of a U.S. Department of Justice complaint is more likely to be a victim of a crime than a suspect, authorities warned Tuesday.
The document attached to the e-mail includes a computer virus, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said in a statement, and recipients should not open the document.
According to a statement from the Justice Department, similar recent hoaxes have exploited the names of the FBI, Federal Trade Commission and the IRS.
“E-mail users should be especially wary of unsolicited warning messages that purport to come from U.S. governmental agencies directing them to click on file attachments or to provide sensitive personal information,” according to the Justice Department.
