Buddy Miles, 60, a drummer who played with Jimi Hendrix and sang in the ’80s California Raisins commercials, died Tuesday of congestive heart failure in Austin, Texas.
Miles, who was born in Omaha, was performing with his father’s jazz-influenced combo by age 11. He then went on to play for The Delfonics, The Ink Spots and Wilson Pickett, according to his website. He co-founded the band Electric Flag in 1967. He also co-founded Band of Gypsys with Hendrix and Billy Cox, the website said.
Stephen Marlowe, 79, a prolific writer of popular fiction best known for his crime novels featuring private eye Chester Drum, died Friday in Williamsburg, Va.
Marlowe wrote more than 50 novels in many genres, from crime to science fiction to historical fiction. His pen names included Andrew Frazer, Darius John Granger, C.H. Thames, Stephen Wilder, Jason Ridgway, Adam Chase and even Ellery Queen.
