Getting your player ready...

The Canyon Eagles of Texas won yet another state title and put coach Joe Lombard, right, in exclusive company with his 1,000th career victory. “I feel like an average Joe,” Lombard said after the Eagles defeated Kennedale 59-43 on Saturday in the Class 3A final. “Obviously it’s a special day. I feel honored. I was called to this profession.” Lombard is the fifth girls basketball coach nationally to reach the milestone and has done it with astonishingly few losses. In 30 seasons coaching in the small towns of Canyon and Nazareth, the 54-year-old coach has a record of 1,000-92. Getting mushy over Iditarod

Well-bundled fans braved wind chill hovering just above zero to watch the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Anchorage, Alaska. Among the fans lined up along the 11-mile stretch from downtown was 91-year-old Roberta Moore of Sarasota, Fla. “I decided if I wanted to see the Iditarod, I better get to doing it,” said Moore, who has read about the Iditarod for years. The actual start of the 96-team, 1,100-mile race begins today in Willow, about 50 miles to the north of Anchorage. But Saturday it was all about the fans, when mushers carry passengers, called Idita-Riders, who bid for the privilege in a yearly auction.
