DENVER — As weather warms, more and more rocks are being dislodged and falling on highways or near them.

Nancy Shanks of the highway department says a boulder 30-foot long, 12-feet wide and 12-feet tall tumbled down McClure Pass. It landed on the edge of Highway 133 between Paonia and Carbondale.

On Thursday, a 3-foot diameter rock came down onto Colorado Highway 139 in Douglas Pass, between Loma and Rangely.

“Just know that this is a time when we are beginning to see rocks and mud,” Shanks said. “It is not uncommon now.” In addition to damaging cars, rock falls have claimed several lives in recent years.
