SANTA FE, New Mexico—Close elections in New Mexico will undergo an automatic recount under a new law taking effect in time for this year’s primary and general elections.
Recounts will be required for certain offices when the margin of the top two candidates is less than one-half of 1 percent.
The provision will apply to federal offices as well as statewide offices and legislative contests and certain other races.
Taxpayers—not the candidates—will pay for the automatic recounts.
The new law will take effect May 14th, several weeks before the June primary election.
