New snow is expected across much of the state Wednesday, with up to three inches in Denver and about eight inches in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service office in Boulder.

Most of the snow will fall between midnight and sunrise Wednesday, with the greatest accumulations along the Continental Divide. The Eastern Plains, meanwhile, are expected to see only about an inch.

Forecasters say that once the snow lets up the cold will stay around, with temperatures expected to be only in the mid-30s Wednesday and Thursday.

A Pacific storm front is responsible for the snow and cold, the weather service reports.

Skies are expected to clear Wednesday with a return of clear skies and temperatures in the 50s by the weekend, according to forecasters.

Chain laws are in effect for I-70 near the Continental Divide, Frisco Pass through the Vail Pass area tonight. Loveland Pass was closed because of snowpack, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Most of the main routes in the mountains report icy and snowpack conditions, according to CDOT.
