University of Colorado junior Sara Vaughn finished second in the mile at the Alex Wilson Last Chance Meet in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday and set a school record of 4 minutes, 40.02 seconds.

Vaughn’s time erased the mark of 4:40.35, set by Sara (Gorton) Slattery in February 2002. Despite the school record, Vaughn’s time was not enough to automatically qualify her for the NCAA championships, although it did move her up on the “performance list” from 30th to 13th.

Several other Buffs competed at last-chance qualifiers with Matt Tebo finishing second (13:53.60) and Bradley Harkrader third (13:54.53) in Seattle in the 5,000 meters. Both have qualified provisionally for the NCAAs, with CU head coach Mark Wetmore saying Tebo is a certainty and Harkrader should qualify.

DU lacrosse beats Brown.

The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team outscored Brown (1-2) by four goals in the second half to claim an 11-8 win in the Pioneers’ annual Face-Off Classic.

Trailing 5-4 to begin the second half, DU (2-3) knotted the score on an unassisted goal by Jon Paulson. Charley Dickenson then gave DU the lead for good.

Eagles win.

Ryan Tobler and Riley Nelson scored third-period power-play goals to turn a one-goal deficit into an eventual 4-3 shootout win for the Colorado Eagles over the Youngstown SteelHounds in Loveland. Nelson scored the lone goal of the shootout.

The win pushed Colorado into the lead in the Central Hockey League’s Northwest Division, two points ahead of the Rocky Mountain Rage, which lost 6-2 to Mississippi in Broomfield.
