Although Silverton can seem like a long way from anywhere, the small San Juan Mountain town’s Avalanche Cafe will have you feeling like you never left home.
Serving healthy, “high altitude” food, the cozy cafe decorated with local art will help get your engine running with Organic Fair Trade Espresso and Coffee along with an assortment of interesting breakfast burrito combinations, bagels, pastries and its own “Eggalanche” sandwich for breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. Lunch plates and housemade health soups all come in at less than $7, and dinner specials (salads, too) are available along with build-your-own artisan pizzas on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
A great stop either before or after a long day on Silverton Mountain or the surrounding San Juan backcountry, the Avalanche Cafe has a knack for turning hungry tourists into temporary locals, one satisfied table at a time.
Get there: Located at 1067 Empire St., a block off the main drag, in Silverton. 970-387-JAVA or avalanchecafe@gmail.com
