Cherry Creek School District Superintendent Monte Moses today announced his retirement to the school board, and this morning, a letter was e-mailed to the staff of the suburban Denver school district.

Moses, who has served as superintendent for nine years, said he will leave the post no later than June 30, 2009, or whenever a successor is selected.

In the e-mailed letter, he said he contemplated exiting the position in June but the board asked him to stay on in the event of a November bond or budget election.

“I have noticed my energy level is becoming increasingly more difficult to recharge to keep pace with the expectations and needs of Cherry Creek on a daily basis,” said the 52-year-old Moses in the letter. “I prefer to leave while my leadership is still perceived by many as an asset to excellence, not an obstacle.”

Moses has been with the district for 17 years.

“He is moving on to new opportunities and new challenges,” said Tustin Amole, district spokeswoman. “I have suspected for a couple of years that it was coming to this. (Nine years) is a very long tenure for a superintendent. The average in the nation is 5½ years.”
