Steph Coyne scored a hat trick and also contributed six assists Tuesday as the 20th-ranked University of Denver women’s lacrosse team defeated Connecticut 21-13 at DU’s Barton Stadium.

The six helpers by Coyne, a junior, rank second in DU history by a women’s player. Also having big games for the Pioneers (3-3) were sophomore Ali Flury (six goals) and senior Megan Carver (four goals and three assists). DU’s Tulley Stapp, a freshman from Mullen High School, scored two goals.

“I was excited that we got a lot of players in the game,” DU coach Liza Kelly said. “I felt that our ball movement and attack was really good.”

The Pioneers scored five of the game’s first six goals, three coming from Flury.

UConn (0-4) cut DU’s lead to 13-9 early in the second half. But the Pioneers clinched the victory with five consecutive goals, including two from Carver.

CHL award nominees announced.

Brent Cullaton, the Rocky Mountain Rage’s leading scorer, is one of five players nominated for the Central Hockey League’s most valuable player.

Rage teammate Scott Reid was nominated for the league’s most outstanding goaltender. Aaron Schneekloth of the rival Colorado Eagles is a contender for most outstanding defenseman.

Big Sky salutes UNC players.

Northern Colorado forward Jamie Schroeder, a transfer from Colby (Kan.) Community College, was selected Big Sky Conference women’s basketball newcomer of the year by the league’s coaches.

The junior from Douglas, Wyo., ranks third in the Big Sky in scoring (17.8 points per game), field-goal percentage (.497) and 3-point percentage (.431).

Senior center Danielle Hagen made the all-Big Sky second team for the Bears (14-15).
