SAN DIEGO — Fifteen illegal immigrants aboard a rickety boat were rescued by U.S. authorities off the San Diego coast Wednesday morning after an apparent botched maritime smuggling attempt.

No one was seriously hurt, though some of the passengers were dehydrated and sunburned, authorities said. The 24-foot boat, which carried 11 men and four women, was en route from Mexico to Southern California when it apparently stalled, said a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The boat drifted for about three days until a passing boat saw the vessel. The 14 Mexicans and one Salvadoran were placed into custody of the U.S. Border Patrol.
