Two teenagers pummeled a Latino man as he left a convenience store in Boulder on Tuesday night, accusing him of “stealing our jobs,” according to Boulder police.

Police stepped in when they saw Abraham Paquet, 19, of Broomfield and Joshua Ruzek, 19, of Lafayette shoving and hitting Ivan Ponce de Leon-Najera, 26, of Louisville outside the PDQ store on Manhattan Circle.

Police are calling it a bias-motivated crime, which under Colorado law could allow Ponce de Leon-Najera to sue his attackers for civil damages, in addition to criminal charges they face.

Ponce de Leon-Najera told police the two teens called him racial slurs and tried to spit on him.
