GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The person killed in a head-on crash in Mesa County is being identified as a resident of Grand Junction.

The Colorado State Patrol says 38-year-old Monique Velasquez was southbound in a 1994 Eagle Summit when she noticed a Ford F-350 pulling a trailered Bobcat that was starting to fishtail out of control.

Sergeant Gaylon Grippin says Velasquez appeared to have applied her brakes in an attempt to avoid a crash, but was hit by the trailer and the construction equipment anyway.

Velasquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup’s 67-year-old driver was not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation.
