DENVER—The Senate has given initial backing to a school reform bill exempting teachers and administrators from some regulations if they show it will help students.
The preliminary vote came Wednesday and the final vote could be as early as Thursday.
The measure would allow schools to have teachers work staggered shifts over an extended school day if it helped single-parent families.
Teachers in “innovation schools” wouldn’t be covered by union contracts as long as 60 percent of the teachers agreed.
Some rules could not be waived, including one requiring students to take the state’s standard tests.
Senate Bill 130 is sponsored by Democratic Senate President Peter Groff and Republican Sen. Nancy Spence.
