ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Air Force is one win away from its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Hockey Tournament after the Falcons got two goals apiece from Brent Olson and Matt Fairchild in a 5-0 win Saturday over Rochester Tech in the Atlantic Hockey Association semifinals.
Falcons goaltender Andrew Volkening earned his fourth shutout in his past seven games in front of a record AHA crowd of 3,933 at Blue Cross Arena.
The No. 3-seeded Falcons (20-11-6) will face No. 5 Mercyhurst (15-18-7) today in the conference championship game. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the tournament. The loser likely will not earn an at-large bid.
Mercyhurst upset top- seeded Army 4-2 in the other semifinal game.
An AFA victory would put three Colorado teams in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, joining Denver and Colorado College.
