A man who fatally shot himself in the parking lot of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has been identified as John Bower.
Bower, 56, was a Jefferson County resident.
He shot himself in the head in the parking lot of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at about 2:35 p.m. on Monday, said Jacki Kelley, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
He was taken to a local hospital where he died.
A handgun was recovered at the scene. Investigators believe a single shot was fired.
A suicide note has not been found, Kelley said.
Bower’s wife, Jere Bower, worked for the county as a support services director and was laid off in April.
