A 16-year-old student collapsed and died Wednesday afternoon at Fairview High School in Boulder, officials say.
Bryce Atkinson was taken to Boulder Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Briggs Gamblin, spokesman for the Boulder Valley School District.
“We’re devastated,” Gamblin said. “Our hearts go out to the Atkinson family.”
Because of his death, the school postponed a two-day culture week celebration that was supposed to begin today, he said.
Instead, a day of silence was declared at the school today, which would have been Atkinson’s birthday, Gamblin said.
Atkinson, a sophomore, collapsed at 12:45 p.m. in front of several students, Gamblin said.
Principal Don Stensrud wrote a letter to parents explaining that a district counseling team would be at the school several days if students wished to talk about what happened, he said.
“There has been a wide range of emotions at the school of nearly 2,000 students,” Gamblin said.
