GRAND JUNCTION — Hundreds of crosses memorializing U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq were put in trash bags hours after they were erected on a campus by an anti-war group.
The crosses were part of a display by “A Voice of Reason,” a group planning to hold a peace rally in Grand Junction today. They said Mesa State College officials had allowed them to put up the crosses on campus in advance of the rally.
A campus official said the removal of the crosses was a misunderstanding and that the groundskeeper responsible thought the display was unauthorized.
“We knew it was an organized event,” said Dana Nunn, a Mesa State College spokesman. “We have no objection to the display at all.”
Nunn said the groundskeeper apologized to the group and helped them replace the 400 crosses.
