The Metro State baseball team continued its rapid ascent in the NCAA Division II rankings, moving up to No. 9 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s national poll.
It is the first time in program history the Roadrunners earned a top-10 ranking. The Roadrunners (27-5, 19-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) entered the poll three weeks ago at No. 21, their first national ranking since 2000. They jumped to No. 13 last week.
AFA’s Rogers honored.
Air Force junior Abigail Rogers was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-gymnast of the year, the league said. She is the first Falcons gymnast to earn the award. Her all- around and floor exercise qualifying scores topped the MPSF. Michelle Kulovitz of Cal-Davis also was honored.
Crush waives Angel.
The Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League released defensive back Chris Angel, a fifth-year pro who had 107 tackles and seven interceptions in 16 games for the Crush.
Eagles take command.
Greg Pankewicz scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period and added a short-handed empty-netter in the third to lead the Colorado Eagles to a 4-1 win over the Youngstown SteelHounds and take a 3-0 lead in the Central Hockey League Northern Conference semifinal series.
Pioneers win golf tournament.
The University of Denver women’s golf team took first place at the NCAA Western Regional Preview at Lincoln Hills Golf Course’s the Orchard Course in Sacramento, Calif., beating second place Oregon by 24 strokes. The Pioneers shot a 12-over-par 876. Colorado finished in a tie for eighth at 913.
DU’s Katie Kempter finished fourth with a 2-over 218.
